Luc J.W. van der Laan studied Biology at the University of Amsterdam and receiving
his PhD degree at the Vrije University in Amsterdam (1998). As a fellow he worked
for three years at the Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, California, on
the xeno-infectious risk of porcine pancreatic islet transplantation. In 2000
he received a post-doc fellowship from the Dutch Science Organization (NWO)
to work at the Sanquin Research Institute, Amsterdam. In 2002 he became staff
researcher at the Erasmus MC-University Medical Center Rotterdam and positioned
at the Laboratory of Gastroenterology & Hepatology to continue research
on transplantation and viral infections. In 2010 he was appointed associate
professor and head of the new Laboratory of Experimental Transplantation and
Intestinal Surgery, LETIS, at the department of Surgery. LETIS accommodates
research on infection, tissue injury and repair in organ transplantation and
the gastrointestinal tract.
Luc van der Laan served as Associated Editor for Liver Transplantation and
is currently on the editorial board of Liver Transplantation and the World Journal
of Gastroenterology. He is a member of the scientific committee of the Dutch
Najjar Society and in 2007 was appointed as chair of the International Society
of Liver Transplantation (ILTS) Basic Science Committee. He received several
awards including the ESOT "Best abstract in basic science" (2005)
and three times the ILTS "Rising Star" Award (2005, 2006, 2009).
